The CoastWatch website provides Great Lakes sea surface temperature data for charter captains, recreational boaters and others. The web-based image maps are available for Lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. Also, specific port images are available.

On the CoastWatch image maps, each line indicates a change in temperature of 1 degree F.

A fully automated computer system downloads sea surface temperature satellite images four times a day from NOAA Polar Orbiter satellites. The data is converted to map images and posted to the Michigan Sea Grant CoastWatch website.

This effort is a partnership of Michigan Sea Grant, the Michigan State University Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Science Research and Outreach Services, and the NOAA – Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.
