The HomeShare Program, offered through the University of Michigan Health System’s Housing Bureau for Seniors, connects senior home providers (age 55+) and home seekers of all ages to establish cooperative living arrangements with assistance from trained home share counselors. Homesharing is a practical housing alternative in which compatible people share a residence based on common needs, interests and preferences.
There are a variety of homesharing arrangements. These may include a payment of rent for space or a reduction of rent in exchange for services such as cooking, cleaning or yard work. Homesharing can involve older contemporaries or younger people. Homesharing does not provide 24-hour personal care.
A homeshare counselor will meet with you to discuss your housing needs, preferences, concerns and expectations to compare the information you provide with their list of potential homesharers and will suggest possibilities to you. You select whom you would like to meet and the counselor will arrange an introduction. Homeshare services are free, although tax-deductible donations are appreciated.
