Interactive Communications & Simulations (ICS)

ICS is in its third decade of offering student-centered web-based educational projects that link students around the world. Middle School and High School students from over 400 schools in some 30 countries around the world have joined their peers and U/M student “mentors” in a broad cross-section of web-based curricular activities that employ accessible technology to expand the classroom.

ICS projects include the Arab-Israeli Conflict Simulation, Earth Odysseys (social/cultural issues forums linked to vicarious travel), and a historical simulation called Place out of Time. We also sponsor a political forum on youth issues, the Michigan Student Caucus, in which students draft and discuss resolutions which they ultimately present to a special Michigan State House Commission on Civic Engagement .
Most recently, we have collaborated with the U-Hospital Cardiovascular Center’s Project Healthy Schools and the Oakland Writing Project on a story-based history and culture project for upper elementary students (with a strong Michigan focus) called “ImagineNation Matters.”
