Michigan Clean Marina Program

Marina participants of the Michigan Clean Marina Program reduce water pollution by voluntarily adopting best management practices.

Though a cooperative effort of the university, government and the boating industry, Michigan Sea Grant develops educational materials for the program, including the development of the Clean Marina Classroom, a web-based training program.

Michigan Sea Grant is leading a regional grant effort, funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (through EPA), to improve and promote greater participation in existing Clean Marina programs in Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes region. Expanding the web-based training tool developed by Michigan Sea Grant, is a primary focus of this new regional effort.

To date, more than 40 have achieved Michigan Clean Marina certification, reducing the overall environmental impact on the Michigan’s coastal areas and connecting waterways.

The Michigan Clean Marina Program is a cooperative effort of the Michigan Boating Industry Association, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Michigan Sea Grant College Program at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

The Clean Marina Program is supported by the Michigan Clean Marina Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
