In 1988 the University of Michigan awarded a grant to the Office of Community Service and Learning to develop SERVE. With its motto, “A vision of change, a challenge to action,” SERVE links over 500 students each year with more than 40 community agencies and grassroots social action groups.

Alternative Break and on-going service-learning programs involve students in community placements, planned reflection, and advocacy opportunities and projects. Program issue areas include:

- Youth and education
- Criminal justice and Anti-violence
- The environment
- Health
- Cultural and recreational programs
- Seniors & Older Adults
- Mental health and chemical dependency
- Ability Differences
- Women’s issues
- Lesbian/gay male/bisexual/Transgender/Ally education and support
- Hunger, homelessness, and poverty
- Global responsibility
- Urban issues
