Michigan Impact

U-M President Mark S. Schlissel
Special Edition
September 2014

Dear Friends,

It is a tremendous honor to begin my work as the University of Michigan’s 14th president.

I was attracted to Michigan for many reasons, none more powerful than its comprehensive academic excellence. The scope and rigor of scholarship is what sets this university apart and makes it such an important, engaging place for study and exploration. Our commitment to teaching and research is held in the highest regard throughout the academy and one of my most important tasks as president will be to help strengthen and elevate the work of our faculty.

Since being appointed by the Board of Regents in January, I have had the opportunity to see much of the Ann Arbor campus, visit the Flint and Dearborn campuses, and meet many people across the institution. My wife Monica and I also devoted two weeks to exploring our new home: the state of Michigan. With stops in Grand Rapids, the Leelanau Peninsula, Midland, Munising, Detroit and Lansing, we were continually struck by our state’s beauty, history and focus on the future.

More than anything, I am impressed by the passion and sense of connection that Michigan instills in its students, faculty, staff and alumni. I look forward to meeting you, and thank you for your support of the University of Michigan.
